Newberry Habitat Homes as good as their Great Foundations

By T. MyersStem walls go up at the new homesites for Habitat 010

La Pine’s Terry Park is home to the two new families that will soon be living their dreams in their new homes. As we follow along in the process of building the houses from the ground up, the foundation push-outs came first last week. Not wanting to waste any time during our good weather, the contractor who works heard for Newberry Habitat for Humanity on the home builds every year was out working early Monday morning to begin to form the foundations to get ready for the cement.

By Tuesday the inspection was scheduled and the cement was ordered.

It is during these crucial times at the beginning of the builds that Newberry Habitat wants you to know how you can get involved with the homeowner’s program and the volunteer program that will now do the work ti takes to complete these two projects.

First, you can sign up to volunteer for a scheduled build day. During the next few months, as the calendar unfolds, the jobs that need to be done are being penciled in. Most days there will be a need for help at the job site and they will need skilled workers who are ready to wield a hammer, use power tools, carry materials, clean up and do the tasks assigned.

There is a process for volunteering. You need to speak with volunteer coordinator, Dan Varcoe at 541-771-9177 to confirm your interest in volunteering and get on the schedule. If you are not able to volunteer, perhaps you can donate dollars or gently used items to be sold at the ReStore. Stop into the store to arrange for a pick up or to leave your donations. The main office in the Sunriver Business Park is a great source for information if you live north of La Pine. They are located on Enterprise across from the Three Rivers School.

Hours at the Restore are Monday through Saturday from 9:30 until 5 PM. You can support the home builds in a third- and very easy way, too. By Shopping! When you are thinking about repairs or renovations, come by the ReStore to see if they have the materials you need in stock. It is a less expensive way to do your projects and there are many types of building materials ready to take home!

Did you know that the ReStore will help you demo your renovation project and take the cupboards, appliances and other building materials free of charge? Contact the store manager, Rolando Alonzo to set up an appointment for Habitat Helpers to come and help you do the work in your home.

Habitat for Humanity believes that everyone deserves a safe and affordable home. Help build La Pine one home at a time. Get involved today! For more information check out our two websites: www.newberryhabitat.org or: www.lapinerestore.org.
