Newberry Habitat’s Women Build set for May 3rd on Terry Court!
By T. Myers
Every year, the Habitat for Humanity International sponsors a work day just for women in communities all across the country. Ladies meet at Habitat sites and learn about Safety, don a hard hat and get busy building a new home for the Homeowner program. This year, the date is Saturday, May 3rd in La Pine at the site of the two new homes that are about to start on Terry Court off Mitts Way!
Mayor Ken Mulenex will volunteer alongside more than 20 local ladies- including Lowe’s Heroes in recognition of the National Women Build Week from May 3rd through May 11th. Mulenex has a special place in his heart for the project and he also serves on the Board of Directors for the local Newberry Habitat affiliate in La Pine/Sunriver.
Executive Director, Dwane Krumme, stated, “Each year, it is a distinct privilege to have women volunteers from our community participate in the special week in which women hold hands with the community and with Newberry Habitat for Humanity to commence construction on two new homes in our Terry Park Subdivision in La Pine.”
The volunteers will be constructing perimeter fencing around the two new homes in La Pine. These will be the 6th and 7th homes built by Habitat in the subdivision and they will eventually be occupied by two qualified families from the La Pine community. With Moms, Dads, friends and soon-to-be neighbors helping with the two projects, the new homes are planned for completion by this fall.
This is not just a local thing, either. Nationally, actress Holly Robinson Peete will be working alongside volunteers in Los Angeles. As national spokeswoman for Habitat for Humanity, as a mother of four, she believes that any time you can give a hand up to a family it benefits the family and the community.
“I am delighted to once again support National Women Build Week and look forward to building alongside the amazing women who take part in this special event,” Peete told us. “A home provides such a strong foundation for families and this week offers great opportunities for women to join together, learn new skills and help families in need of affordable housing!”
We have some pretty amazing women here in this area that will be on the job, onsite, on May 3rd. If you would like to be a part of the day, you can volunteer today. Please volunteer by calling Dan Varcoe at 541-771-9771 or go online to Www.newberryhabitat.org for more information
